Default When only a bluff can take down the pot for you

OK so you’re in a hand where you have a monster draw maybe a nut flush draw or a flush/str8 draw. You call a small bet on the flop, and again on the turn. The river comes and you miss your draw completely, however you’re opponent now checks, do you ever just check and give up the hand?

I seem to be doing this a lot lately; usually I’m shown top pair with a decent kicker, other times sets or two pair. What’s everyone thought’s on this subject, I’m beginning to feel this is a very week way to play the hand and that if he’s opening the door for you to try and steal the pot, you should go for it.
