Why can't he be representing a hand? In reality, you're sitting on a very marginal hand that seems like it has been overplayed to me. It's hard to really say without having seen the progression of the table or how the two of you have been playing, but it seems altogether possible that he was representing having made a straight, flush, etc. Perhaps he has made two pair or trips and is now scared of the flush. Like I said, without being able to hear about his read of the situation, it's difficult to evaluate the play I think.

Easy, he is representing the flush. Nothing wrong with this play if he thinks you only caught a small piece of the board.

well.. I dont give him credit for the nut flush as he limped in and just called my preflop raise. Very dangerous bet for him as I was holding top pair reasonable kicker, gutshot, and a draw to the flush with the Jd. Easy call for me in that spot. He guesses wrong representing the flush here and he is crippled. I think it was a horrible bet..

Jeff, this seems like a bad beat post here. Don't look for insight into the fish's game, look for insight into yours. For instance, you made too small a raise preflop. AJ isn't a hand you want action with and you made an action raise. Make it 12 or 1300 and you may not run into this problem, you'll most likely just pick up the pot preflop.

Hey Gavin.. Good to hear from you.

Thanks for the advice. Maybe I am wrong, but I prefer not to vary my preflop raises too much as then it will be easy for others to know when I want action or not. I was actually pretty happy with the flop and felt based on the action I was ahead. Clearly I can't laydown to his push on the turn.

You going to be at the Rio next month? I am going the first weekend 3/11-3/14

Well, you're actually varying your raise to coincide with the size of the pot. The reason you raise to 3x the BB is b/c it's roughly the size of the pot when there are no antes. Since this is an ante tournament, your basic raise at this point should increase already. I generally make it 4x the BB when the antes come into play. Now that you've had a limper, I would make it 5x. No, you're not folding on the turn in this spot.

No, I'm not gonna be at the Rio. I leave tomorrow to go to San Jose for the PPT and then I'm going on the PPM, so I'm gonna take some time off in between. GL there.

Also, if he hit the flush, why bet? I have been leading at this pot.

If I were in his spot and I hit the flush I would check to the better and then raise. The large bet here smells like a bluff.
