Default Roberts nomination in big trouble

Just when it looked like he had it in the bag:

[ QUOTE ]
Durbin and Schumer were confronted by television producer Norman Lear and other major party supporters during a trip to the West Coast over the weekend, according to party officials familiar with the conversation.

These Democratic supporters are strongly opposed to Roberts, and want Durbin, the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate, and Schumer, the head of the campaign committee, to oppose his confirmation.

[/ QUOTE ]

Story here.

Looks bad for Roberts, pending final recommendations from noted political science professors Barbara Streisand and Alec Baldwin of the University of La-La Land. I bet Bush would never have nominated Roberts if he knew Norman Lear would oppose him.

Nice Joke. But meanwhile a truly real bad news development has been reported by Bloomberg:

Specter Urges Delay in Replacement of O'Connor at Supreme Court

Senator Arlen Specter, Republican of Pennsylvania, said he talked to Justice O'Connor about staying on the high court. ``She's prepared to do that'' through the court's term ending in June, Specter said. The president ``was noncommittal,'' Specter said. ``The body language was not very positive,'' Specter said.

----------------------------

If this happens, it would just keep the pot boiling for another year, and put the confirmation into an election year. YUCK!

The President will nominate someone soon. I'm guessing he's regretting supporting Specter against Toomey in the GOP primary last summer.

I doubt it. Specter seems to be providing the nomination process with an image of fairness while also ensuring any reasonable nominee gets voted on. Getting the vote is what matters to Bush.

Good news. If Bush nominates a nutjob, it needs to be squarely in front of the public at election time.
