Default Structure of Stud (newb question)

I've read about the differences between the small ratio of antes/bring-ins to bet sizes that's typical of low limit stud games, and how one should play in "real stud" games with the high ante structure. But I've never seen a bright line drawn, what exactly constitutes a large ante structure, and what constitues a small ante structure?

Looking at the Empire games though the low limit games appear to have a higher ante structure than the mid limit games. For example, the $1 game has 0.25 antes and a 0.5 bring-in, whereas the $10 game has $1.00 antes and a $4.00 bring-in, which is proportionally less. This contradicts the conventional wisdom of high stud games being looser and more aggressive in terms of proper strategy, doesn't it?

Isn't it a $3 bring-in in $10/20? That's standard, but I've seen $5 as well.

10/20 is really a low-limit game. It has a small ante structure. $15/30, with a $2 ante, is about where "real" stud starts.

Micro-limit games on-line vary greatly in structure. Paradise has no ante. Stars has a small ante. Party has a large ante, and at the $.50/1.00 level, there is an over-ante.

If people are playing half-decently, then "real" stud considerations apply to games such as Party's $1/2 game. High-ante stud is a game of knocking people out, while no-ante stud is more of a trapping game. From my limited experience, however, the players on Party are not going to be knocked out easily, so you basically have to show down the best hand.

Some casinos and sites have gone to a higher ante structure in small games in part because the bigger pot means that they can rake more. For example, in my local $2/4 game, there is a $.50 ante. With eight players anteing and a $1 bring-in, there is a $5 initial pot. That's enough for them to rake $.50, and they do take that $.50, the bastards.

Some loose guidelines for ante structure:

No ante: many $1-5 games, very small games on Paradise

Small ante: $5/10 ($.50), $10/20 ($1), all games on Stars $3/6 and below.

Medium ante: $15/30 ($2), $30/60 ($5), $3/6 on Party ($.50), $6/12 on Paradise ($1), $3/6 ($.50) and $6/12 ($1) at Canterbury.

High ante: $75/150 ($15), $100/200 ($25), $1/2 on Paradise ($.25), $1-5 at Foxwoods ($.50), $2/4 at Canterbury ($.50)

Over ante: $.50/1.00 on Party ($.25), $1-3 at Foxwoods ($.50)

Anyone think this belongs in the sticky?

$6/12 on Paradise ($1)

I’m pretty sure this game has only a .50 ante. It’s been a while though.
