pls explain DDR NON-ECC SDRAM
Dear Techno. Types:
In Dell's small bus. outlet desktop stockroom, some of the cheaper units list their memory as NON-ECC. I assume this has something to do with error checking, but I don't really know. What is it? How much of an advantage is ECC memory over NON-ECC memory? Would I be safe or not safe assumming that Dell's units that didn't have this noted actually do have ECC memory? Maybe they just stopped listing it this way, but some of the units still do have NON-ECC memory. Thanks. |

Re: pls explain DDR NON-ECC SDRAM
ECC has an amount of extra memory that is used for error correcting XOR fashion. It'll allow a small amount of failure from the memory. I don't want to go into it much further, but in a desktop it's pretty much useless, and most ECC DDR you find around is also going to be Registered memory, which I'm fairly sure your motherboard doesn't support. It's for machines where downtime's a problem. You can assume that if it's not listed, it's Non-ECC unregistered memory.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like something I probably will never have to concern myself with. Btw, just because you ended up being given an unfortunate name by your parents doesn't mean you can't change it to something more pleasant. Just a thought. |
