Stupid Question
I generally don't have a hard time understanding basic statistics and probablity, I just don't know what all the symbols mean. An old thread was just giving me some trouble.
what does " ^ " represent. It was the thread about Amarillo Slim's birthdays wager. I beleive what I saw was " 365^n " . |

Re: Stupid Question
365^n means 365 to the nth power. E.g. 3^2 = 9.

Re: Stupid Question
the ^ symbol is called the 'carrot' and in this context means 'to the power of'. Think of it as a little arrow saying that the stuff after it should be written in superscript, like a power typically is written. So 2^4 is 2*2*2*2=16. 365^n is 365*365*365*...*356, 365 times (a very big number).

Thanks
I don't feel as stupid now. I knew what an exponent was, just not when expressed with a limited text program.

[/ QUOTE ] The ^ is a mathematical symbol long used before the the invention of power or exponential notation. ^ represents positive expected value. when two "^" are combined with the notorious underscore it means that he/she likes u. The complex symbol has been used by the Japanese since the dawn of the internet. ^_^ |
