How much do you tip the dealers when you win a tourney?
I came in second in the first B&M tourney I was in. Won $1300 and it was a $50 + $10 buy in. I didn't need any re-buys either - beginners luck .
I had no clue what to tip the dealers and asked the 3rd and 4th place guys what they were going to tip (the first place guy was a total @sshole and I avoided speaking to the man). They said 10% is pretty standard and I saw them both physically tip about that much themselves. Come to find out that the 3rd and 4th place finishers were dealers at another casino. Did I get scammed? What's "normal"? |

I've heard 3% but only if the dealers are not already getting 3% out of the buy in money.

I've heard 3% - 5% is customary, but I've never actually won a live tourney, and don't play many live games at all, so I don't know for sure.

Re: How much do you tip the dealers when you win a tourney?
I read somewhere, a poker book, numbers that were
in the 2.5%-3% range. In small tourneys with one or two winners, I have gone up to 5%. |

Re: How much do you tip the dealers when you win a tourney?
You asked and they told you what they would tip. Thats not being scammed. Dont look at it that way. Dealers normally do tip heavier than non-dealers. Maybe because they know what it's like to deal a tournament and go home with $6 per 1/2 down.
No matter what you toke the dealers, it shows thanks. Personally, I too toke about 10%. oh yea, I'm a dealer. hehe. But I meant to really only take you off the idea you were "scammed". |

Re: How much do you tip the dealers when you win a tourney?
If you had a good time and the tourney was run and dealt well, then 5-10% is good. That 3% thing and the tips combined and the dealers will get about 6-8 per half hour, which is much less than they could make on a live money game.

Re: How much do you tip the dealers when you win a tourney?
Greg Raymer posted another way to calculate a tip.
Start with what you think is a fare wag for the dealers. It is up to you. For simplicity I'm going to use $1/hour. Then estimate the number of dealer-hours. For example, a 5 table that lasts 5 hours might have 15 dealer-hours. 1 hour at 5 tables, 1 hour at 4, 1 hour at 3, 1 at 2 , 1 at 1. For the dealers to make $1/hour, they need to make $15. You should pay your percentage of $15, based on the percent of the prize pool you won. If you won 25%, then your share is $3.75. Notice, no where in here did I mention how much you won. For small tourneys the percentage of your win will be larger than in large ones, but this method always give the dealers a fair shake. (Provided of course that you use a better rate than $1/hour ) |
