Seems to me that with the maniacs I encounter, it takes more than a V$PIP of "20 or greater" to be considered loose, like 30-35 or higher maybe? I personally maintain 16-19, but 20-25 is relatively conservative compared to the field I am accustomed to? Anyone else?

Bison's rating system is just to catagorize players into their pf and post flop tendencies. Since there is a limited number of icons in pokertracker, he was restricted into how many catagories he could rate. With this limitation, he did a great job, and it helps out.

Now that you notice there are differences in LA-A's... use that information. Should you change Bison's rating system... sure... if it fits how you play.

When it all boils down, Bison's system is a starting point. I have removed all of these player ratings from my note exports now (they don't track very well with multiple databases). In my mind, the LA-A is broken down into about 10 more types of LA-A's. The LP-A's have about 4 different catagories. I look at VPIP/PFR/AF-F/AF-T/AF-R/cr%/WSD to pass judgement on players now, instead of just Bison's rating system.

I generally play 3/6 and 5/10 on Party, so my ratings are based on the play there. I've found that breaks for looseness of <15%/15-25/25-40/>40 seem to work pretty well.

I also color the table green if it's over 20% voluntary $ as well.

I agree with Pete: Bison's system was a great start but is by no means the only way of sensibly categorizing players.

ALso, if you go down the road of devising your own system, be aware of just how many hands it takes for some of the more volatile statistics to settle down. See especially the river aggression factor and the WSD number.

I divised my own auto-rating system which is perhaps a little bit out there. Works great for me, but I wouldn't even post it here because these categories that mean something to me probably mean something a little different to the rest of mankind.
