Default First hand of $100ml tourney with AK

Over aggressive move with AK or bad luck?

Final Pot: t3200

Results in white below:
CO has Ah As (two pair, aces and sevens).
Hero has Kd Ac (one pair, sevens).
Outcome: CO wins t3200.

I figured that I was in a race if called; and had some good fold equity. I figured the original raiser for QQ or JJ given that I had one of each A,K and the LP caller probably had at least one of the above too. I also thought that the raise to $700 was too aggressive for AA -- sure looked to me like he wanted to take down the pot there. (which he did and more )

Far from an expert I am but I would say that seeing as its first hand you had no read on CO so couldn't assume he was a manic or otherwise.

I wouldn't have re-raised his 80 bet. I woudl have called and seen how the flop came down. Then you could easily have gotten away with little damage. Of course if you'd have hit here on the flop you could have been sunk as well.

Maybe it was aggressive for AA but then he had no read on you so maybe he fancied his chances of some maniac (not saying your a maniac) early calling this or even re-raising.
Looks like your poker skills maybe worked against you!?

I would have, but I'd have made it about 200-250. If he pushes back from there, then you can make your decision with better information.

I'm not real big on playing for all my chip with AK and the blinds at 10-20. I would have folded to the 700 reraise.

This is the real rub. All of the reasoned analysis in the world about position, etc doesnt change that AK is always risky all in preflop --- particularly at Level 1.

Tuff to fold, but you have to keep in mind that any pair has you beat. I think it's Cloutier who likes to say that holdem is all about having a big pair with a good kicker--but until you hit your pair, A-K gives you nothing but two good kickers!

I simply dont get how AK is tough to fold there. Someone explain it to me.

ITS THE 14TH STRONGEST HAND.....
ITs value is in semi-bluffing people preflop.
You are almost guaranteed to be a dog to any sane player.

When I look at KK or AA I pretty much know im going to the felt with them preflop god-willing....do some of you look at AK and feel the same way???? I just dont get it at all.

I just prefer to have a hand before I put all my chips in the middle.

The lure is that it is a very powerful semibluff hand preflop. I agree that the "right" play would have been to fold to the reraise. --- but I also consider my time adjusted EV. If I win I have a meaningful chip advantgage to start. If I lose, I am down $100 in a much shorter time than finishing on the bubble.

In mid to late tourney its a lot easier for me to fold in that situation becasue of the time investment that I have already made.
