[ QUOTE ]

2?

Warren G. Harding - 1915-1921
Harry S. Truman - 1935-1945
John F. Kennedy - 1953-1960
Lyndon B. Johnson - 1949-1961
Richard M. Nixon - 1950-1953

[/ QUOTE ]

When this discussion comes up, most people don't count Truman, Johnson, and Nixon because they got "promoted" to Vice President. The issue at hand is what was the highest political office a person held before becoming President.

Harding is the answer I was looking for.

Johnson, although a senator, was never elected president.

Nixon was in the House of Representatives.

I am not sure about Truman but if he was a senator and then was elected president I stand corrected but I believe he was FDR's VP.

When I said elected I meant ran for the office of President and was elected to that office.

Johnson as elected president, by a landslide, in 1964.

Truman was a senator when he was selected as FDR's running mate in 1944, succeeding to the presidency when FDR died in 1945.

Nixon was not an elected official when he won the presidency for the first time in 1968.

Since the Democrats have all but written off this election as a loss I wonder who they are grooming behind closed doors?

[/ QUOTE ]

I don't understand why you would say this. According to http://www.electoral-vote.com/ Kerry is way ahead.

According to RCP Kerry is way behind.

Electoral-Vote is pro Kerry and RCP is pro Bush.

The one I give the most credence to is Pinnacle There isn't any bias in that poll.

According to both, there won't be a president because neither has 270 electoral votes.
