There is a strong case that Earl Campbell in his prime (which was very short) was the best ever.

[/ QUOTE ]

Oh man. I remember watching him run as a kid in Houston. Amazing. And while he was a great power runner, his lateral movement and ability to make people miss was always highly underrated. But as you said, his career was just too short.

[/ QUOTE ]

He played for the Lions. A miserable fate for such a great talent.

He is the best RB in so many ways.

Don't even try to argue this point.

[/ QUOTE ]

I agree. He was the best:

1 - Goal line back. (no, wait a minute, they took him out at the goal line)
2 - pass-catching back. (no, wait a minute, he only averaged 35 catches/season)
3 - drive-sustaining back. (no, wait a minute, he was consistently held to losses and/or small gains on most of his runs)
4 - blocking back. (no, wait a minute, he sucked at that)

1. Payton
2. Brown
3. Sanders
4. Campbell
5. Dorsett

Gale Sayers very well could have been at or near the top of this list, if not for having his career cut short by injuries.

Barry Sanders is my favorite athlete of all time. He was the most exciting running back of all time. I'm just not sure if he was the best. I think he lacked dependability.

i think I could name 10 running backs better than emmit smith.

Dorsett
OJ
Brown
Payton
Sanders
Campbell
Dickerson
Marcus Allen
Bo Jackson
Faulk
