Default Would you follow this law?

Years ago i had a certain arguement. Deep into it I (rhetorically) asked my opponent "If there was a law that said you must stand on your head for 1 minute at 12:00 noon everyday, would you follow it?" And to my suprise he emphatically replied "Yes." The arguement ended there, but still today i'm suprised at his response. so...

If this law were actually enforced, I would arm myself at all times, and shoot anyone who attempted to arrest me for non-compliance.

Obviously, I would eventually be murdered by law enforcement officers, but I would attempt to survive as long as possible and kill as many LEOs as possible before they got me.

Which is dumber, following a stupid law that nobody is likely to care about, or getting killed over a stupid law that wouldn't cost you anything to follow? And in the process killing several people who were only doing their jobs?

The fact that you wouldn't ever do what you're saying makes this a little better...

Notice he said he'd do such things if he would be arrested for non-compliance.

I s'pose the Nazis were just "doing their jobs" too, right?

You're not one of the few who said they'd actually follow this law, were you?

Only out of fear. There are many stupid laws I put up with because defying them is worse then just living with them.

I would have to be compelled by the real threat of some penalty before I would obey this law. I don't believe there is any moral or civil requirement to follow ridiculous unenforced or obsolete laws.

Regarding your freind, I would have found some ridiculous law in the jurisdiction of his residence and asked him to obey it. For instance, if your freind lived in Washington state ask him to obey this law (from www.dumblaws.com)

All motor vehicles must be preceded by a man carrying a red flag (daytime) or a red lantern (nighttime) fifty feet in front of said vehicle.

I would start a revolution if this law was ever enforced.

Can't practically enforce this one without violating a privacy law or something. I'd give this law the same respect I give marijuana laws ^_^
