Default The cost of poker

It costs be more a month to play poker than to run my house and car combined.

If any web site charged in excess $2000 a month ($25 000 dollars a year) subscription it would be seen as laughable, but call it rake and we all happily pay it.

Surely these companies are making supernormal profits and it cant be long before competition forces these sites to charge reasonable prices.

Am I mistaken in this belief?

There's no downward pressure on the rake. People will go where the fishiest players are. The fishiest players go to the sites with biggest marketing campaigns. The sites with the biggest marketing campaigns are those making the most money. Those making the most money charge the highest rakes.

I'd be less suprised if party started charging a 4 dollar max rake than rake amounts decreasing.

If online poker is legalized in the US then the market forces you speak of will come to bear.

Wal Mart will start a poker site with like max .25 rakes and [censored].

Average rake is less than 5%. Any live place I've called near Oregon has a 10% rake, sometimes with a minimum rake effectively making it worse.

With rakeback, online rake drops to about 3.75%. That seems pretty damn good to me.

You are mistaken. Fish don't even know what rake is and winning players will pay whatever they have to for access to the fish.

well, it's good percentage-wise, but that really doesn't matter now does it? If you play alot, the monthly fee is going to get ridiculously high. (since the start of March this year I've paid just over 24k$ in rake. That's a tad high for a 4.5 months subscription to the site don't you think?

The poker sites would make a very nice profit with half, or even a fourth; of the rake.

Because people don't care, and the fish in particular will not change sites because of the rake, it will unfortunately stay this way or get worse
