Default ATTN MicroBob and Chipr777: Tunica info needed

Hey guys. I've got a Tunica trip planned for the 2nd weekend in September (10th-12th) and you two seem to be the resident experts. I going to see the Meatloaf concert on Saturday night at the Horseshoe, and my first inclination is to stay there. But I read about the Strike's poker rate ($35 a night, is that still accurate?) and was wondering if the Horseshoe had a discount rate also?

From what I've read, food comps are super easy to get at the Shoe. Is that still accurate?

And finally, what's the tourney situation like on Sat., Sun., and Mon. nights?

Horseshoe and Gold Strike poker rates are the same. $35 on the weekends and $25 durring the week. I believe the week your coming Gold Strike will be in the middle of renovating the poker room. I suggest you call well in advance for a room at Horseshoe. I can't speak for Gold Strike but we have a $130 buy-in with a single $100 re-buy and add-on tourney at the shoe on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 2pm. If your around on Monday or Thursday night the $65 with $40 re-buys has been paying over 6k for 1st.
Food comps have always been real easy at both. The food at Horseshoe is far better IMO.

My sincerest sympathies and condolences for being a meatloaf fan and actually going to one of their concerts (to each their own I guess).

Didn't know that gold strike was renovating their 'room'.
Hope it's a significant change for the better. They could start with getting those slots out of there. Probably would allow for a couple extra tables perhaps.

I've done the poker-rate at the Gold Strike one time and found it to be a pretty good deal.
The rooms are pretty nice. GF had a nice time too.
Just had to play 5 hours to get the $25 weeknight rate.

Have never stayed at the Horseshoe but I assume their rooms are reasonable.

I prefer the poker play at the Horseshoe so if you are planning on playing 5 hours a day and can get the same rate over there it might be worth considering.
(did I read that some of the rooms are a bit loud there because they are directly over the casino floor...not sure...someone who has actually stayed there can perhaps chime-in).

Gold Strike runs several tourneys throughout the week. Not sure about the weekends.
I know they have their 4am tourneys on Sunday and Monday 'nights' (really Monday and Tuesday mornings).

Obviously you can get a complete tourney schedule there.

Also - when I've been at the desk for a chip-purchase or something I've had to wait because whoever was there was reading through the entire tourney schedule to whoever called them on the phone.
Whoever was calling them was obviously asking a lot of stupid and nittish questions about each and every tournament they have.

anyway....if you call them to find out about the poker-rate you can ask for more specifics on their tourney schedule (which seems to alw ays be increasing).

Again though...if the hotel-rooms are decent I would much rather spend 5 hours in the Horseshoe room than the Gold Strike room.
I agree with Chip777 that the Horseshoe buffet is better. Gold Strike's buffet is pretty good too though.

I would rate Gold Strike's buffet a 7...and Horseshoe's buffet during dinner on a good night is possibly closer to an 8 or 9.

Everyone also raves about the Philly Cheese Steak from the Horseshoe snack bar (that you get free for the asking AND delivered to you when you're playing in the Horseshoe room. not bad AT ALL!!!)

what are the biggest limits regularly spread in tunica? I think I remember that the horseshoe regularly spread a 20 game but I could be crazy.

yes.]

typically the shoe gets the 20/40 game going...especially on the weekend of course.
been told it gets pretty wild.
i can say from experience that the Horseshoe 10/20 game is usually pretty good.

Gold Strike has 3/6 typically....and maybe 6/12 on the weekend I think?? Not sure.

They also have a wild no-cap buy-in 1/2 NL game where there's plenty of chips flying around and usually a couple of stacks in the $2k range.

I think I saw Chip777 mention that they are spreading NL at Horseshoe now??

I was there on Sun-Weds the one time I visited and 20-40 went every night. It's action packed...they play with a rock a lot of the time also, which increases the action. They spread 30-60 with the rock on some nights instead of 20-40, not sure if that's a regular thing. I really like it there, will try to get back sometime.

I just did a 4 night's stay at Sam's Town, got back into town last night, so I can give you a little info about the poker room.

The poker room itself is ok, it's pretty decently sized but open to the casino floor (upstairs) so the outer tables can be a little noisy if people are playing those slots (nickel slots so nobody normally is).

Most of the time they have only 3/6 limit and 1/2 NL games going, sometimes 2 tables of each, but always at least 1.

They serve free hot dogs that are pretty good and they bring up Krispy Kreme doughnuts pretty often as well, since they have one downstairs.

The comp rate is terrible though, you get $1.40 an hour comp so it takes forever to earn a dinner buffet.

My previous trip to Tunica I played only at the Goldstrike (once again 4 days) and found them much better with giving food comps. If you played 3 hours or so they'd comp you a buffet no problem. I had more buffet comps than I could use up for the trip.

The Goldstrike's room was more quiet and had more activity/game selection, alot of young players and women. The dealer's seemed pretty miserable though.

Anyway back to Sam's Town, they didn't keep track of my time played very well. It's not a sophisticated system they have, when you start playing they just punch a clock on a sheet of paper and you turn that in when you are done. There also was alot of confusion with the poker room rate (it was my first time using it so alot of it was just my inexperience). Some people said 5 hours of play a day, some said 6, etc. The rate is $25 weekday / $35 weekend at Sam's, like everywhere else.

They run tournaments on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Each starts at either 11 am or 6 pm, I forget which time is which day though.

The positives are that the dealers there are all friendly and pretty easy going. Even when people were doing royally stupid crap they would politely try to correct them.

There are alot of old fossils that play at Sam's it seems, alot of old guys over 60, much less women/young players than at Goldstrike.

I also had a chance to check out the new Horseshoe room. I didn't play just walked through it. It's definiately alot better now that it was before and looked to be full of "serious" players (NO women, alot of sunglasses, high stakes games, etc). Some of this may of had to do with the fact the WSOP circuit even is going on.

The Grand also has a nice poker room (which was packed due to the WSOP event). The only other room is at Hollywood and it's pretty miserable. A few tables in a dimly lit back corner. The people playing there look pretty incompitent though, even more so than the other places.

FYI: I'm born/breed in the South so I could take it but you should know TUNICA IS HOT HOT HOT HOT, it was freaking 103 - 107 over the pavement the weekend I was there. The casinos are pretty cold though, so you gotta be pretty versitile in your dress so you can take both.

I played at the Goldstrike during the 1st week of the WSOP event and really enjoyed my time there. I thought the dealers did a nice job. There were alot of newbies at the table I was at and they were very patient with them. Played mostly the $1/$2 nl and saw just about everything you can imagine. ALot of chips thrown around. I don't get to play alot in casinos , so it was a good learning experience. Learned that the Midnight on crowd is alot more serious/aggresive than the 5pm-8pm crowd. If you get a chance, take a drive and go up to Memphis and eat at the Rendevous. Worth the trip.
