Default Pot size in NLHE

Am I correct in thinking that in NLHE the dealer is not obliged to count the pot if you ask? Also I assume that you are not allowed to handle the chips in the pot yourself to count them?

Cheers.

If you do this in a poker room, prepared to be A: kicked in the nuts and B: kicked out.

Pot limit is the only time a dealer can state pot size.

The dealers not required to know how much is in the pot in NLHE. He/She will know up to the point max rake is taken but after that there's no reason to have to know. I've always kept up with the pots in every game I dealt, limit and no limit, because it's great practice for when I play. After a while it becomes second nature.
