You might take a look at the books in the FAQ that you'll find in my signature below. If you need to learn the actual mechanics of a game, play online for play money and you'll learn the basics of how the game proceeds without having to risk anything.

I still consider myself a beginner so I can highly recommend Winning Low Limit Hold'em by Lee Jones, which I am currently re-reading again right now. I just placed my order tonight for Ed Miller's new book Getting Started in Hold Em'.

I second the Sklansky recommendation. His books are a little hard to get through for novices, but it is well worth the effort.

There are some things that SSH will have to help you unlearn to truly become an "expert" player, but I think Lee's book goes a long way to keeping you from being a long term loser!

[/ QUOTE ] Wait wait... since you are so new, you may not know the difference, but are you wanting to read a bunch about limit-hold'em or No Limit Hold'Em (the one that's always on TV)... you could get the right concepts for the wrong game if you don't know. There are big differences between the two. If you get a chance to get it.... Gambling Theory and Other Topics by Mason Malmuth is itself a highly technical but good book... but more importantly for you, has a list of 124 poker books, then some for blackjack and the some more for other casino games. He gives a rating for each of the books and then explains why he feels the way about them that he does. Most of them also have a good summary of what the book is about too. I have enjoyed going through his listing and then buying/reading through his list of 10's (they're scattered around in the 124). I'm not done with them all yet, but the one's I've found have been very beneficial to my play (NL). Here's some basic ones you can get started on (he says more about them all): If you know nothing about hold'em or poker at all: Hold'Em Poker by David Sklansky "... The book covers the basics, such as which hands to start with, plus concepts pertaining to very sophisticated play..." (GTAOT by MM pg.306) Limit Hold'Em: -Small Stakes (around 1/2 or lower)- Small Stakes Hold'Em: Winning Big with Expert Play by Ed Miller, David Sklansky, and Mason Malmuth (MM didn't include this book in his list because it wasn't out yet, but it is very well spoken of here at the 2+2 forums... I liked it too [img]/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img] ) -Higher Stakes (More like 10/20 and up)- Hold'Em Poker for Advanced Players by David Sklansky and MM "Since I co-authored this book, I decline to give it a numerical rating. However, rest assured that this is the strongest strategy for the Texas Hold'Em game put into print..." GTAOT by MM pg. 307 Pot-Limit and/or No-Limit Hold'Em: Pot Limit and No Limit Poker by Stewart Reuben and Bob Ciaffone "Without a doubt, the best information ever put out on these games..." GTAOT pg. 319 and for all of the above: Super System - A course in Power Poker by Doyle Brunson "This text is considered a classic source of information on most major limit games played, as well as on no-limit hold'em..." pg. 308 I hope this list helps you out man. I'm workin on learnin everything in all of them at the moment to be the best player around [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] I'm joking... but seriously I'm gonna be the best player around.
