Default ($11) bottom 2 pair facing check-raise

Five see the flop. I planned to check-raise to drive out draws. Logical? But was beaten to the punch by the small blind. My action now?

What kind of read did you have on SB ?
How did he get so short stacked this early ?
If he is a donk then I expect either QJ or KJ.
If he has a set of 8's and pushed fearing a straight draw then oops. But, it isn't as likely since you have an 8.
I would have expected a raise pre flop from the SB if he had 10's or Q's with that many limpers ahead of him.

He may have QT which would suck but, I'm callng this here.

SB lost his chips by bluffing on multiple streets.

Like you, I thought that 88 was unlikely due to there being only one combination possible. I extended this reasoning to opponent possibly having TT. And I thought if someone limped with QQ and caught a set, then bully for them.

Also, I widened the SB's range for check-raising due to his shallow stack.

I see people responding saying call. I actually pushed, figuring I wanted to get rid of any other straight draws or two pair draws. Hmm.

Result in white:
