super mario world is the best of the series in my book

i also have no idea what final fantasy 6 is. i remember it going straight from final fantasy 3 on the snes to final fantasy 7 on the playstation. i assume you're talking about japanese version numbers.

[/ QUOTE ]

Most of the avid RPG freaks use the Japanese Final Fantasy numbering so it's consistent. In the first round poll I wrote "Final Fantasy III (VI)" but got lazy for this poll.

So really, I'm referring to the last FF that was released in the US for the SNES. With Terra, Celes, Edgar, etc. etc. etc.

I don't know how you would do multi-player, but that game or any game with a (very) similar combat system would be great.

Some people are doing a free remake. Google Project Xenocide. If it ever gets done, it'll be sweet. Anyone who thinks any game is better than X-COM is wrong.

That's a good analysis, Swede. I wouldn't mind having a few more toys to play with, perhaps some discovered by humanity, rather than just lasers, and some new ones from aliens. It might be interesting to have more complicated decisions about weapons choices than, "Sweet, now I have the heavy plasma. I'll give all my guys one of those." Even that giant robotic thing that tagged around with the etherials that was supposedly resistant to plasma went down easier with a heavy plasma gun than with a laser rifle, to which it was especially vulurable. A new pair of alien breeds (since they always seem to come in pairs) could also be an interesting challenge. I think a couple tweaks like this would probably be more refreshing than a multiplayer expansion. Any diplomatic functionality, it would seem, would have to overwhelmingly favor allying into one super-team. A four player game would be like starting out with four bases with four times the UFO hunting power, four times the research and manufacturing capability, etc. Stretching out the solo options a bit would be great.

Super Mario World is better than SMB3 by a wide margin, if not more widely recognized, and Yoshi's Island is the best 2d game in the series if you count it. Super Mario Bros. and Mario 64 are perhaps the two most influential games of all time, so SMB3 can't take that title. SMB3 is great, but it's third best in the series by any criteria.

I think you're going to have to justify these statements.

i think that's a bad, bad, bad, bad idea

if you say ff3 the ff freaks will know it's ff6. clearly you wouldn't be talking about ff3-jpn. if you say ff6 people like me will say, 'oh that must have been some rpg freak ff import' and might vote the other way just because of it.

i haven't played yoshi's island but it was release as a 'super mario advance' series on the game boy advance. you'll be able to find recent reviews of it under that heading, and i do remember a lot of people talking about how insanely good and underrated the game was.

super mario world is sickly good, just an perfect game. super mario 3 to me is a fantastic game, but more in an breezy and repeatable kind of way.
