Default 3/6 (6 max) shot question

Would really appreciate forum's advice--is $1,500 enough to take a shot at 3/6 (6)? And if so, at what point do I move back down to 2/4? $1,100?

Thanks,
M

this is more based onyour own personal comfortability.

I'm assuming you have a regular job or are a student (you aren't playing full-time for income).

Of course $1500 is okay for a 'shot'.
This is assuming you were okay at the previous limit too of course.

A $400 stop-loss is okay....but $600 might be a little bit better.
If you're not prepared for the possibility of dropping 100BB's then you probably shouldn't be playing at that limit imo.

See Victor's graph in Kurosh's thread to see how frequently one can have a 100BB downswing at 6-max (his graph is 5/10....but it's not THAT different from 3/6 in this respect I would think).

But if you want to take a quicker shot and then get out of there if you drop $400 that wouldn't be too terrible either.
good luck.

Thanks Microbob, I really appreciate that reply. I have a full time job, so this entire BR is discretionary. I was thinking of going to 3/6 (6) and moving back down to 1/2 (6) around $600. I've realized from this forum that taking shots is the best way to move up faster.

Thanks again,
M

I think it's okay...but I'm also still impressed with those who put in 200k straight hands at the same limit.

I think when you are 'kinda/sorta' ready you should go ahead and start.

I don't think of myself as a specific-limit player.
I was playing 10/20 for a little while....but things started turning around there and I wasn't liking my game or my confidence for a little while. So I went back to 5/10...then back up to 10/20 if I found a good table on a weekend...then back to 3/6 if i felt like dorking-around a bit and clearing a bonus or something.

etc etc.
I play between 3/6, 5/10 and 10/20.
I've been known to play 2 limits at the same time (maybe 2 tables of 5/10 which are more auto-pilot with 1 table of 10/20 that I am more focued on).

In other words, you don't have to limit yourself.
Play 3/6....go for it....it's not THAT different from the 1/2 donks. Just takes getting used to playing with higher dollar amounts.

I personally took a shot at $2500 and hit a 60BB dwonswing and went back down to 1/2 for a while. 3/6 is quite a bit tougher than 1/2. 1/2 there are so many total goob's it's unbelievable. You'll face many more turn raises and C/R's.

If you really want to at this point i would put a 75-100BB limit on losses and go from there.

$2,000+ at 1/2? That's excessive to me unless you're going it full time and need security. I'm comfortable having $600 at 1/2 and never going under $250--I played 80k hands that way taking most of my winnings out every month.

if he doesn't want to play full or on a nonparty site for 2/4 6max .. its reasonable

a lot of ppl recomment a 500BB BR for SH, which is 3k ..

i dropped 94bb in 3 hrs today...and this def isnt the fastest ive lost 100ish bb...

i'd wait till you have at least 1800 so if you lose 100BB you only drop to 1200 and you can still play 2/4

They recommend 500 BBs for playing at a level consistently, and I agree and understand that. But to take a shot where you wont have to move back down unless a pretty unlikely hit comes, I'm wondering what you need then. I can lose $900 at 3/6 (6), 150 BBs, before moving back down. I know that can happen, but hopefully it's not completely likely that it will.

To take a shot at 3/6 you need at least $30.
