I strongly disagree
Magriels book is gold and as up to date as it was when it was written. A few positions might be a bit off, but the concepts and ideas still apply.
It's old but still standard, like TOP is for Poker.

Magriel's book is good but it's little dated. It was written before computer AI. The concepts he explains are still useful, but I've read that susbsequent analysis has shown some of the specific positions and recommendations are questionable. It's a classic, but kind of like Doyle's SuperSystem?

If you are a complete beginner I'd go with Robertie's Backgammon for Winners and follow with Advanced Backgammon.

a good buy is 101 bacgammon puzzles. i forgot the author.
