Swede, You realize that all these ignorant kids that haven't seen most of the good old westerns will just ruin this poll like they did the others?

I'm only 22 but I was thinking the same thing... This has been my favorite genre of films since I was about 5.

Do you consider it more of an adventure movie a la Indiana Jones? I guess I can buy that. If western means set in the 1800's then you have a point, though that would rule out several John Wayne movies that were set in the early 1900's.

"Western" should be defined as a film set West of the Mississippi during the time period 1840-1910 where horses or rail were the prominent method of transportation.

support your local sherriff and support your local gunfighter should both be considered in the comedic arena.

Just about every john wayne movie should be considered but I actually didn't like true grit or rooster cogburn...those were some of his worst westerns I thought....despite the critical acclaim it got. Same can be said for Clint Eastwood.

Hadn't really thought about how I actually classify it or why. It just hadn't even occurred to me to consider it a western.
