I think you and I approach this pretty much the same way. That is when you're gambling with a $1K stack that comes and goes then how much respect can you have for a $30 expense?
Dinner, a bottle of nice wine, and extra $5 or $10 on the tip, these are not areas where you want to worry that you're being extravagant and wasteful.

Frivolous? Perhaps.

My wife still cuts coupons and searches the newspaper for bargains at the grocery store. I just go to the closest store.

I think your time and energy is better spent on figuring out ways to make more money. You can't save your way to prosperity, though saving and investing for the future is always wise.

On the other hand serious investments (not expenses) require careful consideration. Like taking care of your bankroll, or buying a piece of property.

Don't sweat the small stuff.

I'm a pretty cheap bastard IRL, except when it comes to food. I eat out a lot, but that's probably a laziness thing of making my own stuff. Other than that I'm really stingy. I still drive a crappy car, biggest purhace I've made since I started playing poker has been my 2001 fp and I kinda regret spending that much on a monitor =/.

I do pretty well not thinking about the value of money, only the game when I play and being concious of the value of money at all other times. I can't point to any one thing as to why I am able to do this; I guess I am just used to switching between the abstract and the concrete.

If this sort of thing interests you, read the work of Khaneman and Tversky. They have done tons of studies and have some great theories on why people make the decisions they do (and how people evaluate situations, which lead them to those curious decisions). People are probably tired of me recomending those guys, but their work is really great and has the bonus of being extremely applicable to poker and life.

i like to think of my bankroll in terms of hyundais. i think that helps. Wagering only part of a hyundai on a hand gives an extra degree of abstraction, which helps when moving up in stakes.

On the spending side, I avoid buying hyundais, but spending money now makes sense because i got plenty of years to save. Also investing in porn, gambling, tobacco, and other socially irresponsible stocks is +EV.

Which did you get? I got the one with gel inserts, I thought it was nifty, so it did serve a purpose for a short time... Once I ran out of the gel packets, I was too lazy / didn't think it was worth it to buy more, so now it's just sitting there.

Truth is, my friends told me how much they prefer electric, so I bought it, but it's not a close enough shave (imo) as a mach3/other normal razor.

I hear you duck. I have been pretty stingy with money all along. This year, when I realized how sick my hourly rate was (and have a real job anyway), my sense of money in the real world is all out of whack, because I see it in terms of "hours of poker".

Like: "Cingular is screwing me over and is going to charge me a $150 cancellation fee. I've already been down there 3 times and called them 3 times...so really if I spend over 2 hours on this (which I already have), it's a waste of my time. (so I'm letting it go)".

But then again, if I had those 3 hours back, would I have used them to play poker? Or was that coming out of regular work time ($20 an hour?).

The old me would be enraged about the $150. Now....meh.

I can't say I like where I'm headed psychologically with regards to this...what happens if in a few years I'm making $200 an hour? (and there are lots of you out there who could answer this). What IS worth your time anymore? If it takes you 30 minutes extra to find the cheapest flight, you better have saved over $100 from what you orignally found.

(Thankfully I've made peace with the conflict of "spending time with others" versus "I could have made $200 playing poker instead of watching that shitty movie". I'm always taking the social route when available. However, when I have to entertain myself, poker wins out over just about everything else...)
