Was this such a horrible play?
Here's the hand history for a Pokerstars Sit-N-Go. It's final 4 on a 9 seat single. I'm JoeDeertay:
PokerStars Game #3153062115: Tournament #15600056, Hold'em No Limit - Level III (25/50) - 2005/11/25 - 10:11:20 (ET) Table '15600056 1' Seat #5 is the button Seat 1: JoeDeertay (1980 in chips) Seat 5: w8non13 (1125 in chips) Seat 7: honda022767 (7680 in chips) Seat 9: fishbonesoup (2715 in chips) honda022767: posts small blind 25 fishbonesoup: posts big blind 50 *** HOLE CARDS *** Dealt to JoeDeertay [5h Ac] JoeDeertay: raises 150 to 200 w8non13: calls 200 honda022767: calls 175 fishbonesoup: folds *** FLOP *** [9d 3c 2d] honda022767: checks JoeDeertay: bets 400 w8non13: raises 525 to 925 and is all-in honda022767: folds JoeDeertay: calls 525 JoeDeertay said, "ok" *** TURN *** [9d 3c 2d] [4c] JoeDeertay said, "what i thought" *** RIVER *** [9d 3c 2d 4c] [Td] *** SHOW DOWN *** JoeDeertay: shows [5h Ac] (a straight, Ace to Five) w8non13: shows [Kd Kc] (a pair of Kings) JoeDeertay collected 2500 from pot *** SUMMARY *** Total pot 2500 | Rake 0 Board [9d 3c 2d 4c Td] Seat 1: JoeDeertay showed [5h Ac] and won (2500) with a straight, Ace to Five Seat 5: w8non13 (button) showed [Kd Kc] and lost with a pair of Kings Seat 7: honda022767 (small blind) folded on the Flop Seat 9: fishbonesoup (big blind) folded before Flop Before this hand I was taking a lot of pots down by raising with good hands preflop and winning it right there, or taking it down on the flop with a cont bet. Because everyone was folding to the cont bets I thought this was a good flop to try one since it had a decent texture and the ace high with the gut draw might still be good anyway. When that guy reraised me all in I thought he might have had either been trying to catch me bluffing and semi-bluffed a flush draw (since I hadn't shown down a hand in a while) or maybe had an overpair. I was the only one left to act since the other 2 folded and it was up to me. I figured I had 7 outs twice - 3 aces and 4 for the straight. that gives me about 2.8-1 odds from flop to river (right?) to hit a winner in my mind. the pot was 1925 and it cost me only 525 more to call, which is about 3.8-1 odds. I also knew that if i won the pot id be "in the money" (top 3) and the practical double up would give me a decent chance to win. So i called and got yelled at when the straight came. Anyone else want to yell at me? |

Re: Was this such a horrible play?
I guess your play is okay, but it's really a rockstar move to try and catch your opponent bluffing like this. You have to be exactly sure, and here you weren't, and you were wrong, so I say a fold is prudent here.

Re: Was this such a horrible play?
I didnt think that he was only bluffing there. I said he mighta been bluffing or had an overpair. Either way I had the right odds to call a bluff or an overpair. Only thing I didnt think of was a set but the only one that made sense was 9s the way the game was going. But I geuss ur right, I wasn't 100% sure but I thought the reward was much greater than the risk if it panned out.

Re: Was this such a horrible play?
I think you were right by calling theire. Even though I think most calls with just a draw are just horrible. I think to crusial mistake in this hand is to slow-play two kings because one can hardly get away from them later and with no money to protect them from a draw its very risky.
The way the hand is played I would not think he is on a pure bluff as he showed strength by reraising you on the flop. So either he has an overpair (likely at smaller stakes), a set or a draw. Unless the player is known to be tight I would also call. Dancer |
