Default simpson\'s season 4 dvd set

i purchased it at target for 29.99 (it was on sale) and this might be my favorite yet. 4 disc and i think there is 6-7 epsiodes on all discs, each episode has its own options for extras.

it has some of my favorite episodes on it --- e.g. april fools day even though its a clip show its still pretty damn funny, sober homer. it has a lot of extras on it---most i have not used because i had just bought it. you have the option (similar to the 3rd season) to play the whole disc through, which i prefer.

does anyone every listen to the director commentary? i havent just curious

cheers

Except for a few commentaries on this latest disk, I've listened to every commentary on every episode on every disk on every boxed set, and on the futurama ones too. They're once in a while a bit too obsessed on this or that aspect of putting the raw artwork together(Simpsons far more than Futurama), but often they're very funny and lively, and filled with fun tidbits.

There's already in the commentary on the early Simpsons boxed sets a little bit too much putting down the themes and pace of the earliest shows on the Simpsons for my taste, sometimes. The first years were all very good ones, and I think the Simpsons underwent a marked decline as it speeded up substantially and got to be more oriented purely toward gags. In the early years and especially the very earliest, the satire was both more biting and more cutting edge, and the family stuff more heartfelt and recognizable as truly relating the kinds of feelings and problems and funny ways of talking families really have. It was kind of more like exposing a raw nerve, and things developed in the time they needed. In the recent years, there is very little time to throw out a gag before the next one is incoming, and the show feels mechanical in comparison, and the characters more streamlined and shallow, less capable of change or surprise. It's become a comedy factory more than a labor of love.

Tbe 4th season does have a lot of really good shows on it. The characters were still learning and growing, letting us sit in and laugh at their awkward lessons and recognize a few things from real life. Seeing Lisa break Ralph's heart in front of all Springfield in televised slow motion after he thinks she "Choo-choo-chooses" him is worth the price of Year 4 all by itself.

By the way, I was indifferent about Futurama at first myself, but took a chance on the first boxed set. Finally having a chance to see the episodes in some kind of continuity without Fox preempting them with baseball and "movie events" or whatever constantly gave me a chance to actually get in sync with the characters, and I fell in love with the show. It is subversive and chock full of clever things that go on between the characters unsaid. I think Matt Groening took the anarchic spirit of the early Simpsons with him when he went on to do Futurama, and added in a good bit of sly wickedness. There are a few episodes I haven't cared for in the four sets that I have, but many really memorable classics, and I think there's only one episode I've never played twice and just a handful that I haven't played over and over again.

I'd highly recommend Futurama, Matt Groening's subsequent effort, to anyone who liked his "The Simpsons."
