Default Remembering Other Cards

I've heard that in stud especially, it is of the utmost importance to memorize the cards of your opponents. Therefore, my question is about that. How did many of you learn how to do this? I'm thinking just put a card down, count to ten, then say what card it is. Eventually, add a card, so I have to remember two cards. Any idea?

i usually just put them in order high to low in my head and say them back to myself. you just have to play a lot of hands basically.

it's easier at the beginning to just remember the exposed cards that would have helped your hand

then after you have that down, start remembering the exposed cards that might help your opponent's hand

there is never really a point where you have to remember all the cards that have been folded...

Hi All,

Good suggestions so far. If you want to see a more extensive discussion of this topic, search the archives for two great in depth posts by DocAZ on various memory techniques for stud.

Good luck,
Carlos

I'm not sure I'd say this skill was of 'utmost' importance. Reading hands and players, choosing starters, choosing games and varying your play are all equally important. However, it certainly is a nice ability to cultivate.

Here's what I do...treat the third street visible cards as a phone number. I start with the card after the low card and skip my showing cards to derive a 7 'digit' number. Then I make another quick scan to identify any 'dead' suits (3 or more showing). Then I repeat the 'phone number' and dead suit(s) to myself a few times just like I would if I had to remember a phone number long enough to walk to a phone and dial it. If you can remember the suits of the aces, even better.

Then you need to be able to put folks on hands and remember just a few more cards that may make a difference. That part just kind of flows with experience and becomes almost second nature.

Many new stud players get hung up on card memory as an issue. Try a few techniques. Practice a bunch. It'll come. The other skills are far more difficult to master.

Ok, I've had a look at it, and there the wrong way round. There also must be some more posts by DocAZ on this, but I can't find them. The search function is pretty confusing
