Aspiring Poker Dealer

I’m planning on moving to Vegas in a month or 2 to become a poker dealer. I am planning on attending dealer school first thing when I get down there. Does anyone have any experience dealing in vegas or has anyone attended a dealer school? How much do dealers make on average? Also does anyone know of anyone looking for a roommate in vegas! I am looking to find a place to live with people who love poker! Thanks in advance for any thoughts positive or negative

I'm just curious, why would you want to become a poker dealer?

I would like to become one also, but locally- and I am only 17 -so I got a little while to be 21.

I think being a poker dealer would be exciting and fun. Especialy high limits. Just to see people wager 100 bucks on a bet is incredible.

I hear vegas is one of the two worst places to deal cards with cali coming in first or second depending on who you talk to. They make better money just about everywhere else but if you want to see the scene and you're young/carefree enough to just pick up and move... more power to ya. I think the community college there offers dealer school so you don't neccesarily have to pay a private company more (?) money to learn.

If you're not tied to income you might have better luck by simply being a concierge in the poker room and learning by dealing tournaments at first. BTW, concierge is just a nice word for busboy.

There is no such thing as a concierge in poker rooms. "Brush", "Floorman", "boardperson", "chiprunner", "dealer", "tournament director", those are the common positions in a poker room.

California is one of the BEST places to deal. There are a few Southern Cal poker rooms with a lousy reputation for dealing only because of the pukes you deal too in the higher limit games. But overall Dealers in California do quite well. LV has gotten alot better thanks to the boom. Still a shiathole place to live, but if you get in one of maybe 3-4 places in LV to deal, (requires a fair amount of experience), you can do pretty well. You need to be able to handle the presure of some extremely large games with over 1 million on the table, but if you can then it is possible to do well once the players get to know you. But one also doesnt have to deal those games every single day. In fact in my experience the "smaller" huge games(like 200-400 plo) get more total jerks than the biggest games.

Tunica is also very good, but that is changing slowly but surely. More than likely Tunica will be avg at best within a year. But it is extremely low cost of living.

Florida, with the smallest games (2-2 limit holdem) thanks to some state laws can be EXTREMELY good to deal.

Why would someone want to deal? Well why would someone want to become a mechanic? The poker business can in fact be highly rewarding financially.

Another good source for info is casinodealers.net, go to the "about dealing poker" section.

poker dealers are in very high demand here and if you go to school it shouldn't be too big a deal getting a job, except that it's a bitch to apply at most places here, you gotta do it online first, then verify your mom's maiden name and grandma's bra size etc etc. They'll probably CHECK where you went to KINDERGARTEN so don't lie on the application and make sure the phone numbers are correct, because they're almost certainly GOING to call, particularly on the strip.
