Default Computer for my mom

My mom wants to get a Dell laptop computer and I need to help her with the specs. All she really uses it for is to type up invoices for her wedding cake business and for e-mail/surfing the Internet.

Any advice on the minimum specs I should be looking for? Celeron or Pentium M?

The cheapest you can get, the only thing worth thinking about is the screen but it doesn't sound like she'll be using it for long periods. Pcs are stuffed to the gills with RAM and processing power these days and despite Microsoft's best efforts the most basic model will be plenty powerful enough to do word processing and browse the web.

as rev said, just go with the base model that is always on sale. if your mom is really not going to be doing much more than you describe, the base machines are way more than she needs. don't let the nerdy boys tell you any differently. for your mother, the dell inspiron 1000 is fine, and is also wireless ready and 2nd monitor ready. if you customize anything at all, just take 512 of ram instead of 256. the rest of the base model is fine.

Thanks Granny. I will probably go with the Inspiron 1000 with the upgrade to 512 MB of memory. Any reason to think that the Inspiron 1000 won't last her several years without having to upgrade?

You've gotten good replies, but just in case there's a choice on the laptop you're looking at....Pentium M. Celeron is an all around bad choice.

I totally agree here. The Celeron is the worst possible choice you can make. Make sure it is a Pentium or AMD. But, I don't believe Dell's come with AMD.
