I don't know if the AVG Free Edition is the best, but I do know it has kept my computer virus-free for years, now.

I receive automatic updates almost every day; and the programme deep-scans my computer every day, automatically deleting or quarantining the very occasional viruses that slip through the net of ongoing active detection.

I would be happy to recommend it for the private user.

I would recommend AVG, also getting Ad-aware SE is also a great idea, it scans your computer for spyware. Having a few programs is a good idea because some check for certain things that others do not, or are at least slower to update.
