New Orleans
Thinking about this one after the thread with Scarlett J. in it -
Every movie that's set in New Orleans should nominate the city for a best actor/actress award - including Love song for Bobby Long, Runaway Jury, and Interview with the Vampire - it's just seems so goddamn cool and unique - residents must post here and tell me what it's like to live there RB |

Re: New Orleans
I haved lived around New Orleans all my life and in the city for the last 4 years. It is, by far, the most unique city I have even been to. The night scene is amazing, bars don't close and are packed 7 days a week. The music is amazing. The locals are crazy. The food is outrageous. We have a few casinos, the Mississippi River, Lake Ponchatrain, the Gulf of Mexico, and hurricane parties, Jazz Fest, and of course Mardi Gras. The French Quarter serves as a home to the most eclectic bunch of people you could ever meet, and did I mention the food?
On the other hand, 80% of the incorporation is a dump. The local government is truly pathetic, and crime is a serious problem. Taxes are high, and our sports teams seem incapable of putting together a successful season. Public education is not even an option for your children. All things considered, I don't think I'd want to live anywhere else. If you haven't visited, you must. If you do, look me up. |

Re: New Orleans
I should have mentioned I'm always eavesdropping on WWOZ's audio internet stream.
Lately, I've been using the thinly veiled excuse of Poker to go to places I want to go to but otherwise wouldn't go just to see like a tourist (like NYC, for example) - so a trip to New Orleans, esp. in winter, may be a possibility - RB |

Re: New Orleans
I went to Tulane for undergrad, i can't think of a better place to spend your 18-21 years. The city caters to basically everything that you want to do during that period of your life. The only problem is some people never get over it. I've been out of NO for like 4 years now, but I have plenty of friends that are still there treading water in life, and i think the city has a big part to do with it.
I agree with the previous response about the cities problems with corruption/crime/general infrastructure issues. I still try and go back at least once a year to visit, to me it is the epitome of a place that is fun to visit, but I'm not sure I could ever live in for a really long time, or raise a family there. If you're thinking of heading down i recommend sometime early in Jazz-fest, that was always my favorite time of year there. |

Re: New Orleans
I turned Tulane down because I knew I'd drunk out. I love NO.
How much is rent for a place downtown (not necessarily in the French Quarter, but around there somewhere)? |

Re: New Orleans
I am also from New Orleans, well actually Norco which is a suburb about 20 min's southwest of New Orleans. I have spent a large number of drunken nights in and around the city.
The entire state is unique, and I have lived in about 6 others so I can speak from experience. I love to go home to visit, but not sure I'd ever want to live there again. NOT the place to raise the kids, but the ONLY place to party. If you ever get the chance to visit any part of LA, take it and you will be changed forever. I have several friends who tend to spend almost every vacation there. I haven't spoken to many people who didn't love their time spent in New Orleans, but I have heard plenty of complaints about the smell in the Quarter! |

Re: New Orleans
I grew up in New Orleans and moved to New York when I was 21. The cost of living is very low, the general pace is slow and relaxed, and there is always fun to be found. The food is of a sort that can't be found elsewhere. You should definitely visit, and post when you're trying to think of places to go/things to do.
