Default How often do you play??

Just thought it might be interesting to see who plays what, how serious you are and why you play O8. Eg is this a hobby, part-time or full-time, and what stakes you play.

I'll start. Poker is my income, and after playing 2300 sngs I've had enough of them (3 weeks ago I drop 50 buyins in ~300 sngs, then proceed to win 90 buyins over the next ~250 sngs). I just don't enjoy sngs, every one feels like a race. The variance also called for a break (even though alot of it was good variance).

I moved to O8 because I enjoy it, I like working on my game in O8 and it's a much more laid back game.

Other reasons are pretty obvious in this statement:

-An O8er 4tabling 5/10 6max will make as much as an SNGer 8tabling $109s, and do it using a much smaller BR and experience less variance.

So now I'm a pro but beginner O8 player (eh I can afford it for the moment). Playing the .5/1 until I've got a good game (and clearing some bonuses). Then I'll get into 6max as it allows for better table selection (pick from both Full and 6max) and should also develop skills for the higher games.

Hold'm 25 table hours a week for 4 years (2/4 to 5/10 Limit), making the switch for something different and probebly put the same in in O8 - - - -unless I go broke! LOL

I'm a PL08 guy and poker is a profitable hobby for me. Even on Party, I don't think you can always get a "decent" table at any limits at any time of the day. Overall, I'd say PLO8 is increasing in popularity online, but not as quickly as NLHE. Since March I have over 8000 players in my PTO database at various limits. (not datamining) Even if 30% of those are really different aliases for the same player, that is a pretty big number of players to draw from.

My impression from comments that I have read, and my own experience is that you can achieve higher BB/100s at PLO8 than Limit, and there is no comparison it terms of which game is more interesting.

Good Luck

Course, but you can't compare the two by bb/100, since a BB in limit is worth alot more than it is in PL or NL.

Eg, say we have 2k. We can play 5/10 limit with that or PL100 (200bb for limit and 20 buyins for PL). The limit player earns say 3bb/100, while the PL player earns 20bb/100. While the PL players makes more BB, he actually earns less. Limit play earns $30/100 vs PL earning $20 per $100.

I'm not sure I agree that 200 BB's and 20 buyins are equal for O8 and PL08. I actually find that PL08 has a much lower variance than O8. With a $2000 bankroll, I think you can easily play at two $100 buyin tables in PL08, However, I'm not sure $2000 is NEARLY enough to play on 5/10 Limit 08 tables.

I happen to keep my Bankroll at $2000-- cashing out profit, and I've never had a day where I've lost more than $200 multi-tabling at $100 tables and below (I've lost more playing at higher limits to be sure-- which is why if I am going to play $200 tables consistantly and multi-table I need to commit to increasing my bankroll). I feel absolutely certain that playing at %5-10 limit my variance would be much much higher.

Moreover-- I think your math is wrong. 3 BB/100s at $5/$10 tables is $30, but 20 BB/100s at the $100 table is $40. (assuming you use the formula that BB/100 = 2 Big Blinds per 100 hands)

"assuming you use the formula that BB/100 = 2 Big Blinds per 100 hands"

Sorry, I meant regular BB not PTBB. 40bb just isn't sustainable

"and I've never had a day where I've lost more than $200 multi-tabling at $100 tables and below"

Then I guess you're lucky. You do want 20+ buyins though.

"However, I'm not sure $2000 is NEARLY enough to play on 5/10 Limit 08 tables."

200bb for a game with much lower variance than HE sounds fine????

If you meant regular BB's then I believe 3 BBs on the 5/10 table would be $15 not $30.

I don't see how you come on this forum as an Omaha novice and proceed to tell me what the appropriate bankroll is for games that you don't play.

I've got 40,000 plus PLO8 hands since tracking, and a ton of limit hands before PTO came out, and I'm telling you from my experience Limit 5/10 and PLO8 $100 buyin are not remotely equal. $2000 is more than sufficient for PL08 even playing 2 tables, and I don't believe it is nearly enough for Limit 5/10 O8. And from my experience, 20BBs (PT) IS sustainable at $100, or very close to it.

Why do you believe that Limit 08 has less variance than HE?

Not in limit. Limit a bb is a bb. It's 2x in NL/PL because that's how PT calculates it.

"Limit 5/10 and PLO8 $100 buyin are not remotely equal."

Never said they were skillwise.

"20BBs (PT) IS sustainable at $100, or very close to it."

I'm very sure you mean 10 PTBB. 20PTBB = 40 regular BB.

"Why do you believe that Limit 08 has less variance than HE?"

Because everyone tells me so. It's a split game, has a lower standard deviation, is a game of large edges etc etc.

"I don't see how you come on this forum as an Omaha novice and proceed to tell me what the appropriate bankroll is for games that you don't play"

I'm not. 150bb is generally the figure thrown around for L08. Then again you'd really have to play 6max at 5/10.

"$2000 is more than sufficient for PL08 even playing 2 tables"

If you are adequately bankrolled you don't need a larger BR to play more tables.

You said your've never dropped more than $200?? Then you're very lucky. That's just 2 buyins, which is silly for any type of poker.

Back to the original issue, you seemed to think comparing bb/100 was fair, and I said it wasn't. I never said anything about 2k being the perfect bankroll or 5/10 and 100PL being equivilent stakes, I was just giving an example of why it's skilly to compare NL/PL BBs to limit BBs.

I play 60+ hours a week, but I vacation frequently. I multi-table, multi-site and all that jazz. I learned, am learning, limit o8 cuz it's easy to play a few tables of that while i play holdem sngs at another site.

poker is my income, but i don't consider myself a professional. it's just a job.

Just a relaxing hobby for me, maybe 10 hours a week single tabling the 6-max 1/2 up to 5/10 LO8, with an occasional NLHE STT thrown in. Floating around 9bb/100 on 20k hands in the last year or so...

I'd probably do it much more often if I wasn't married, but then again I'd also smoke more, drink more, sleep less, eat worse, get less exercise, and be generally more miserable too.
