In the interest of full disclosure, I'm an agnostic.

My trouble with miracles is that they seem to indicate a very inconsistent God. If God decides to turn Mt. Everest into a giant cross then he has effectively eliminated the test of faith. Anything that was clearly a demonstratable miracle would make it impossible not to believe in God, and so a god who values faith or belief would never produce such a miracle.

If God was going to intervene in our lives, it seems to me he would prevent children from dying or punish the wicked, or in some way preserve and enforce the moral code present in most religions.

In fact, it is nearly impossible for me to accept that there is a reason that my friend might die in a car crash, or an earthquake will kill 100k people all in the same area, and a benevolent god is controling events.

I can believe in an uninvolved god (if not disinterested) much more easily than one who is in some way directing events.

It is an indication that what people deem as very important are not that important to God. So it is a matter of trying to conform one's thoughts to His.
