I think you need to do a little research and reading, Benman:

It was Democrats more than Republicans who strove to maintain segregation and to thwart civil rights progress. As this has been discussed at length before on this forum, I suggest you use the Search function--or do your Searching on Google, if you so prefer.

...which is why I hate to agrue about moral issues, it goes no where. I prefer economic issues because at least those you can discuss without offending the other half of the population and it just becomes a good debate

Maybe you just aren't any good at debating moral issues

See these are the kind of posts that occur when you try to debate or even mention moral issues.

From that perspective I say that sometimes Liberals get things right (such as women's sufferage and anti-segregation);

[/ QUOTE ]

Dont confuse liberal with Democrat in this instance. Republicans have traditionally fought for civil rights while Democrats have until recently strongly opposed them for minorities. There's a reason why MLK Sr, Jackie Robinson, and James Brown all supported the re-election of Richard Nixon.

Since republicans are capitalists and anti-abortion and anti- gay marriage (not anti gay) are not religious for eveyone your point is kind of invaild there. While for some its religious what does that have to do with anything, except the people who founded the constution where also christians and is what our country is found upon.

The heavily religious are found in red states, of course, and are not generally recipients of government handouts, and so also oppose the welfare state.

[/ QUOTE ]

This isn't even close to accurate.

I'm a republican and I dont agree with this, I dont think either party is racist or anything like that, the parties just differed on the way to go about solving the particular problems you mentioned.

that has nothing to do with anything, most states that are Democrat or republican are only divided by about 5-10%, so to split it up to red states blue states which eveyone loves to do is very misleading

The poster that I replied to said that the red states "were not generally recipients of government handouts". How does my link then not apply? I'm not doing any 'splitting', I'm merely responding to and refuting his unsubstantiated claim.

Hi Fishhooks,

I also don't think either party is racist.

However, I am pretty sure that the original poster erred when he suggested that Republicans were more obstructive of civil rights legislation than were Democrats. In fact, the opposite was the historical reality.

Thus his case has a very large hole in it.
