If you represented your ace on the flop then people are much less likley to play back at you without 2 pair. You did not bet the ace so now it is pretty much a guess. Check on the flop is wrong.

It is bad because now hero is playing river guessing games and put himself in a tough spot.

Actually, the check on the river is fine against an opponent who is likely to bet worse hands than he would call with (almost all non weak-scared opponents after this betting sequence). Assuming that you have no intention of folding, of course.
