Default small stakes suggestions for kept hands.

In the book small stakes it suggests (in a tight game) to keep in middle pos as long as there is no raise AKs-A2s and KQs-K9s. There are more but those will do for the question i have:

before i read the book i wouldnt have kept anything below a9s or k10s in middle pos, i'm sure they know what they are talking about but i'd assume me being fairly new to poker i should keep to better hands to stop stuff from gettin complicated? Is there +ev is keeping hands like a2s from middle in a tight game? also in a loose game, wow the suggestion is you can keep pretty much anything, like: UTG aks-a2s or qjs-q9s. That just sounds insane to me.

Someone set me straight plz =P

Thanks
