Hey. I may not be ZJ, but I started playing online about 7 months ago when I was 18 (don't worry Granny) and have been a winning player ever since. While I know there are a lot of young kids who just lose their money playing poker online, there are a good amount who are winning players, just not on the level that ZJ is at.

Because 14 year olds are stupid

If you were to rephrase this to “Because most 14 year olds are stupid" I would agree with you.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, I'm pretty content with my original wording.

Whose responsibility is it to protect them from themselves? The parents? Certainly. The government? Definitely not in my opinion. The casino? Again, not in my opinion. Is it moral to protect those who are inept at the expense of those who are perfectly capable? As Ben Franklin said, "Those who are willing to trade freedom for security deserve neither freedom nor security." I believe this stands true even if it is the freedom of 14 year olds after all are they not human beings too?

[/ QUOTE ]

Newsflash: We restrict the "freedom" for 14 year olds all the time. Currently, they are not allowed to vote, not allowed to drive, not allowed to buy cigarettes, not allowed to linger in a casino, not allowed to buy alcohol, not allowed to buy cigarettes, not allowed to consent to a physical exam, not allowed to enter into contracts, not allowed to work for pay, etc.

Sorry, but I don't think Ben Franklin was waxing eloquent about the precious right of 14 years olds to coldcall pfrs with J5o.

I think 14 year olds should be allowed to do all of these things for the same reasons they should be allowed to play poker. Please do not misunderstand me, I do not think that 14 year olds should do these things but I feel that these are matters parents should handle not government. Just because something is currently being done does not make it moraly right. Slavery existed in the United States for more than 200 years. If we had used the "That's the way we are doing it now so it must be right" logic the 13th amendment would have never have happened.

In VA, we say that you can drive when you are 16, vote when you are 18 and drink when you are 21.

I always find it amusing that Americans are responsible enough to decide who drops bombs on their behalf three years before they are allowed near a drink that might make them be sick.

I'm not saying it is slavery. I was simply trying to explain why the logic is faulty. I should have used a less extreme anology. However I need to use something I could be sure we both agreed was wrong in order to get my point across. The issues of the day such as abortion, the war in iraq, etc would not work because I do not know where you stand on them.
