I have played in tournaments where a hand was ruled dead if it was exposed to live players. I don't know how common this is, but I've seen it happen. I think they compare it to a string bet in the sense that one shows their hand to gauge their opponents reaction before deciding what to do.

This is hilarious. "we know it's to your advantage to make the guy show even if you have a winner so you can glean information. but we really must encourage you to think of the good of the game and disregard your own interests despite the lack of any negative repercussions if you don't show your cards."

I agree. People should just follow the rules that decide who shows first.
