"Velocity." Ugh. This bothers me. Most of the time they just mean "speed." Velocity is a physics term that applies to speed plus direction. Announcers just say velocity instead of speed when referring to pitchers ("He has good velocity on his fastball!") because it makes them sound smarter. They're not. Even if it's become "common usage" that velocity can now mean simple rapidity or speed of motion as opposed to the actual physics definition, it still sounds pretentious and lame. [/ QUOTE ] How much baseball do you know? A good fastball has a lot of movement on it and that's what they mean when they say "he has good velocity on his fastball."
