Everyone here hates it, but for the smaller games, to win and stay in action while you learn, read the cloutier/mcEvoy NL book (their first one).
It's a bit weak tight, especially cloutiers angle, but it'll get you going. And stay away from laggier heroic plays you'll read about on MHNL section here.

Pushing a 9 out draw is almost always -EV if you get called. The idea is that you will get called infrequently enough that even if you do get called and don't quite have the pot odds, you are "freerolling" in the sense that you break even because you took enough other pots and if you do hit the draw, you end up with a huge gain.

I think he should NOT read the Cloutier-books.
I read them when starting out and I got a way to weak/tight approach to the game in the beginning.

On your third point I think you are correct for NL $25, $50 and $100 (most of the time). I think you have to start to develop a meta game strategy when you get to NL $200 and beyond. People are those levels are paying attention. I started NL $200 playing TAG and after 50 or hands at a given table, my pre-flop raises got too much respect so I started raising with any two on the button and then re-evaluated post-flop. When people saw me check instead of continuation bet and fold to raises I started to get my monsters paid. I will say that metagame is not an excuse to LAG it up, but if you have aspirations of NL $200 and beyond you had better be cognizant of it.

I thought that this was useful and was good to practice. I can't remember what else, it's been a while since I looked at that book. It wouldn't ever hurt to read it... btw to the OP, this topic has been covered in the Books forum many times over. I'll give a hint though - TOP should be on your list.
