Default is it a good idea for me to get health insurance?

wouldnt i be better off just paying for hospital bills with cash? i think im well off enough that if something bad happens to me i can just spend some of my savings.

i currently dont have health insurance and dont know if i should apply for it now or not.

any advice appreciated.

Why bother? Just risk everything you have, along with everything that your family may have, and save the $85 per month.

It really drove the point home when my Dad sat me down and explained that one crazy motorcycle / snowboarding / kayaking accident could cost my parents everything they have worked all their lives for in the blink of an eye.

Suck it up.

Funny, same thing my parents said to me. If you're not getting insurance through a job (I assume you're a poker pro) then you're going to pay more than $85/month. Why don't you actually use the internet to check out some prices?

Yup, thats the correct answer. I don't know the exact stats but you having 100k is just as good as having 50,000-1,000,000. Most medical bills are either really small 200-2,000 for things like check ups, 'routine' ER visits like stitches, allergic reactions, etc. or they are $1,000,000+ for cancer, automobile accidents, chronic diseases, etc. Also if you need medication for anything serious you are up shyts creek

If everything was $100-$5000 then you would be safe gambling that you would stay healthy however with health costs one bad beat and the risk of ruin is high, there is no way that your piddly 100 grand will cover it.

Your parents are not liable for you but will they let you go without medication/treatment that can save your life if you need it?
