Default top pair low kicker no position

I'm slowly understanding not to panic with top pair/low kicker and position. But without position still confuses me. I was k4 in BB. 4 others in pot. 7JK, 2 suited. I checked and next bet and the next 3 limped. Oh-this was 2/4 at a live casino, but the players were absolutely terrible. What would you've done?

I would've bet out to see where i stand. If the next guy raises me i figure i'm behind and can fold on the turn if i don't improve.

limping is when people call preflop, not on the flop. took me a while to pick up what you were saying, as I didn't understand how you could check in the BB and then have someone bet/raise and have players limp after that preflop.

Usually, I like to lead out with a bet here against bad players.
