Default Lucky Chances switches to Spread Limit

Just went to LC today and found out they can no longer spread No Limit. All of their big bet games now have a cap of $200. One of the floor said they are working to get it changed back to allow NL but looks like it'll be this way for a while.

Doesn't really change the 1/1/2 NL game i've been frequenting but really changes the 2/3/5 NL. And their 20/40 NL is going to die soon, the game practically becomes Limit after the flop. I wouldn't be surprised to see a 100/200 LHE game going soon, once those big NL guys figure that the $200 cap makes the game essentially limit at those stakes. Looks like Casino San Pablo might be getting some big games going over there with their new monopoly on NL.

And their tournaments have become spread limit too. Doesn't really change much since the cap on the tournament bets usually covers the whole table, but I noticed that they don't have antes anymore deep into the tourny.

well im quite sad to see this happen.. but im also sort of happy because I really hated Lucky Chances.. the time charge was ridicilous and there are too many sharks. And my friends all think its the best thing ever (so I end up tagging along and not doing so hot). Now they won't want anything to do with the place once it gets changed to spread limit.

Maybe Casino San Pablo will pick up the slack and have a bigger game and rake it for the same. That would make me very happy

Here's the article I saw in yesterday's SF Examiner:

"Colma hedges bets on gambling ruling
City Council to consider limiting bets, suing state

By Matthew Artz

COLMA — City officials are scrambling to keep high-stakes gamblers and the millions they contribute to city coffers from fleeing the city’s lone gambling establishment.

The City Council will review an ordinance Wednesday to mandate $200 betting limits, as directed by the State Division of Gambling Control, at the Lucky Chances Casino — Colma’s single largest tax revenue generator.

But the council will also consider a possible lawsuit to overturn the gambling division’s ruling, which city officials fear will cost it 15 percent of its annual revenues.

“Needless to say, this would significantly impact our budget,” City Manager Diane McGrath said. She maintained, however, that Colma would still manage to pay off a 2003 voter-approved $24 million construction bond measure backed by anticipated casino revenues.

Operating without betting limits since it opened in 1998, Lucky Chances, a cardroom, grosses more than $10 million annually. This year, it is anticipated to generate nearly $4 million in tax revenues for Colma, according to officials. Lucky Chances’ attorney, Michael Franchetti, estimated that revenues would shrink 30 percent to 40 percent when $200 betting limits go into effect this week on games such as Texas Hold’em, a form of poker. McGrath estimates the impact would be $1.8 million in total lost revenue.

Colma’s loss could be San Bruno’s gain. The city is home to Artichoke Joe’s, an 84-year-old cardroom that under San Bruno law offers unlimited betting on several games. After hounding state regulators for years about Lucky Chances, Artichoke Joe’s attorney, Alan Titus, succeeded in winning a ruling that Colma’s ordinance allowing for no-limit betting violated state law.

At issue is a 1996 state law that imposed a moratorium on expanding gambling in cities. When the law went into effect, Colma mandated a $200 betting cap. But right before Lucky Chances opened, the Council amended the ordinance to allow no-limit betting.

“The ordinance change violated the moratorium,” said Nathan Barankin, spokesperson for the gambling division.

Instead of filing a lawsuit, Colma could choose to lobby state lawmakers to change the moratorium, which expires in 2010, or call an election on a new gambling ordinance. City officials say they are unsure if a “yes” vote to end betting limits would override the moratorium. However, if Artichoke Joe’s challenged a voter-approved no-limit betting ordinance, Franchetti said, Lucky Chances could offer no-limit betting while the case worked its way through the courts."

Seems more mikely that AJ's will (fairly quickly) pick up the NL action, since they initiated the complaint in the first place. It also seems likely that Colma will do everything it can to return things to the way they used to be.

I think it went into effect midnight last night. According to the news article, it looks like they'll appeal and get it overturned and can spread NL again while they appeal. My guess is NL will return to LC fairly quickly.

Looks like that is the intent of AJ's, but what doesn't make sense to me is that they could have been spreading 1/1/2 NL this whole time but didn't? Seems a bit strange to me.

I fully expect for Colma to get this sorted out ASAP, Lucky Chances is a goldmine for that tiny town. They'll probably have spread limit for only a short amount of time before they go back to NL.
