I'd add I find it incredibly hard to compare Luke to other films in terms of better/worse because of some of the issues raised here. Luke is a deeply complex character, and the film seems so superficial at a casual glance, I just find it too distinctive to be comparable to pretty much anything.

Actually Shawshank is a sort of companion piece to Cool Hand Luke, I'd guess.

Where CHL does not submit until really broken (and even then, his spirit comes back), but is sort of courting the wrath and the mercy of the gods, Andy is different.

Andy does submit, and keeps his subversiveness hidden (or brings it out only to his own benefit, even if it's just to maintain his own dignity in the face of brutality).

And Andy ultimately wins because his will and brainpower allow him to see the way out, and take it, even if the will and the way out need to span decades. He isn't willing to submit to fate, but carefully picks his way out of it, and brings his friend out of it too.

Luke's goal and redemption is in not surrendering but accepting his fate as determined by his actions, Andy's goal and redemption is escaping such a fate.

And both are heroic because they walk their paths alone.

I dunno, all this only just occurred to me - I might come back to this futher.

Catch-22 is a lot like Cool Hand Luke. I think it's no coincidence they came out of the same time period.

I know enough. I've seen 7 of the movie on that list. I was just quoting a good line from it. Sorry if you didn't find it funny.

In the context of the film, that line had some humor. In the context of your post, it was pretty lame.

I guess you're right, it was lame. It didn't fit the post. But since my post was lame doesn't mean I don't know much about movies such as stated earlier.
