Preflop 88, raise here or not.
1 Limper. I'm in the cut-off. 88. I raised.
Is this ussually a limp or a raise? Other info: Table image was TAG, maybe a bit bullyish, I had everyone covered and took down most pots without show down. The way the table was flowing lends itself towards raising here, but is it generally the standard move? How bout a PP slighly lower or slightly higher? |

Re: Preflop 88, raise here or not.
If this table is shorthanded and the flow is going your way then take it down, if the table is full handed, especiallY oop then this is a time for a variation of the 5/10 rule and play for set value yeah?

[/ QUOTE ] But, hero is not OOP here nor has there been a raise (only a EP limper). In this situation, I think it's a matter of personal preference whether you raise or not. I wouldn't, but I know many who would. |

Re: Preflop 88, raise here or not.
Either play is probably correct. I think in 6-max it's a pretty clear cut raise, no?
Full-ring, I raise here probably 75% of the time. Especially if the blinds are tight and I'm sure I can get heads up. |

Re: Preflop 88, raise here or not.
This is 6max btw, sorry for the confusion. Sitll doesn't matter?
Same situation, 66, easy limp, yeah? 99 and TT, I think anything other than a raise here is wrong, I think 88 is borderline and I can accept that limping for set value, but with 99 and TT I think the flop comes 3 unders, or onl a single over, often enough that a raise is the correct play. No? |

Re: Preflop 88, raise here or not.
Still borderline at 6-max, at least to me. 50/50 call to raise ratio. If you call, you aren't just playing for set value. You can also play poker against your opponents.

Re: Preflop 88, raise here or not.
66, still doesn't matter. 6 max, still doesn't matter. Really, how you play one hand preflop, doesn't matter. What matters is having a preflop strategy that has all your hands working together. How you play one hand preflop AFFECTS how you play other hands preflop. Don't get bogged down by the small stuff.

[/ QUOTE ] I think it's far from boarderline at 6-max, and this should be a standard raise at full-ring too. The CO is too good of a position, why do you want to limp in and let button come in and have position the whole hand? Also, the limper will call with any pocket pair and check/fold most flops when you raise. When you limp, you end up in a spot where he loses nothing when he misses on the flop, but he'll extract something from you when he hits a set and you are playing a lone pair. Protect these middle pairs preflop, they are strong hands in position. |

But, with position and one opponent, you are really in good shape to make a little bit of money when he checks to you. |
