Default proper tipping

Why should I feel guilty about my tipping habbits? I mean why should I tip all my money away? The games are hard to beat consistenly any way and Im copeting with the rake, now the dealers act like they expect 2or3 dollars out of pot? I DONT THINK SO. Hey Im not cheap, I tip well at restaurants bars etc. But did the dealer really do anything? Why should he or she get my money for dealing me good cards and what if they werent good cards just my ablity to pick up the pot with a junk hand. Should I not get a tip for that? I used to over tip, then I realized hey 12-15hrs of play and I tip away 40-50 bucks could make the differnce between good or bad session. I like the rules over seas no tipping the dealer. The house is making a killing the should just pay them more in my opinion. Belive me I dated a dealer for a while and she made more money then most players make a week.I dont feel bad. This little rant stems for a episode at the hard rock casino in tampa last night. 2 dollar game thats it which already sucks 5 dollar rake again cant beat that The high low games are the games that i stuied and saw you can win because the people dont understand the game. I scope a large pot for a 2 dollar game (like 140 or something) with a steal wheel. I gave 50cents (like the hip hop guy) to the dealer and the jerk says jee thanks. WHat a jerk these other idiots are tipping 5 dollars on 22 dollar pots. I give 50cents tips in that game not my fault they are spoiled with huge tips (like half the pot) Im I being to cheap or is tipping correct. Rember 2 max, bet 5 dollar rake, you need a strong hand to win because 7 or 8 people in on the river.

Generally - one dollar a pot is considered standard, but if the pot is really small don't feel like you have to tip and if its super big don't feel like you have to tip more. Also if dealers give attitude don't tip at all.

I totally agree. Tipping is not because you dragged a big pot. It's a way for everyone to take turns to tip a dealer who is doing a good job by running the game well, i.e. making sure people act in turn, that the cards stay in order, enforcing any other rules or proper ettiquette.

If you suck as a dealer or show lack of attention to your job, you do not deserve a penny. Tips are earned not an entitlement. (And as a side note, that's the problem with the world today an overall sense of entitlement.)

I generally tip a buck, but in Vegas you will see the "pros" tipping 50 cents.

I agree, but in some of the casinos here in Tunica (unless they have changed in recent months) the dealers share their tips in lieu of keeping their own. This tends to defeats the purpose of tipping for good performance and not tipping otherwise.

Hi All,

When I first started playing at the 15/30 game in the Taj at AC I decided that the way tips worked was stupid. I decided that the amount of tip should have nothing to do with how many pots I won or how big they were, and everything to do with how well the dealer dealt. So, I decided to just give every dealer a tip at the end of the 30 minute shift: $0 if they made mistakes or were excessively slow, $0.50 if they were average, and $1 if they were good. I figured that this was a fair contribution because on average I was giving each dealer $1 an hour, which, if everyone else did the same, would come out to $16 an hour in tips. With the hourly wage they get from the casino of approx $4, I figured that $20 and hour was a very generous wage (I have friends with college degrees that make less). I also figured that the dealers would be happy to receive tips even when they never dealt me a winning hand.

Alas, apparently dealers, like most people, don't like when thing are done differently, and some of them got annoyed at my system. I don't think that (most) dealers are worth more than $20 an hour so I decided that to keep them happy but pay them the same amount of money I would only tip $1 when I won a pot that went past 5th street (or had more than 5 big bets in it). This comes out to about the same $1 per hour, just in a more random fashion. I will rarely tip a dealer if they made a significant mistake (even if it benefits me). Also I often will give an extra $1 tip to an especially fast dealer, or one who does a good job of keeping their cool when a particularly obnxious player starts yelling at them just because they are getting unlucky. Lastly, I don't think the amount you tip should be dependant on the limits you are playing.

I'd be interesting to hear what you guys think about my tipping systems, and if you have an others that are interesting. Also, what about tipping waiters? I usually order 2 drinks at a time and give a $1 tip, assuming that they get the order right and don't leave me waiting for 30 minutes. I don't tip them to hand me a bottle of water if they already have it on their tray when they are passing by, however.

Regards,
Carlos

Carlos, I appreciate the math you used to support your argument. I have long been in support of generous tipping every pot but after a live session of 1-4 Spread Limit Stud where no one was aggressive (small pots), I noticed a lot of my winnings went to the tips...

However, one dealer made it very fun as he could heli-whirl your upcards pretty close to your other cards and was very quick doing it.

Sounds reasonable. At least you have a plan that makes sense to you.

BeerMoney's thoughts..

I think tipping is sort of a personal thing. Some people like to tip big cause it makes them feel better. It makes them feel like a high roller, or a philanthopist. Others are stingy. They don't feel like sharing their $$ unless they have to. I try not to pay attention to what goes on around me in that sense, and just tip as I see fit.

I do not play in casinos to win a lot of $$. I play more for fun. Because of that, I tend to tip more generously than I would if I was there to make a living I think.

As Carlos said, I see no reason for dealers to be making more than $20/hour. IMHO, dealing is semi-skilled labor and dealers are not irreplacable.

Why is Sara always right?
