I would recommend the Decemberists and Iron and Wine.

both of these are pretty obscure and if you ever find yourself in a hipster argument with Jack of Arcades or CallMeIshmael you can just drop either name and instantly claim the upper hand.

I'd advise staying far, far away from bands like Modest Mouse who have "music videos" on television. they are [censored] sellouts and have already killed their cred. you will be a laughing stock if you listen to this.

also, don't forget some of The Clash to keep it real/old school.

good luck, and just remember that when you debate hipster music on this board the true masters are going to try to overwhelm you with the most obscure stuff just to make you feel like less of a person. sometimes they'll even make up bands/albums/songs just to test you. if you find yourself in one of these situations, just remember that while the person talks big and tough, on the inside he is just a little boy in Spain playing pianos filled with flames.

OMG are you on lately.

oh, you're witty no doubt. it's just kinda annoying. if you weren't talking about me it'd be kinda funny I guess.

I display much more of the attitude I'm (jokingly) accused of when it comes to sports than music though.

Here are some of my favorite albums of 2005:

Wolf Parade - Apologies to the Queen Mary - indie rock
M.I.A. - Arular - hip hop
Art Brut - Bang Bang Rock and Roll - funny, catchy pop rock
Broken Social Scene - self-titled - catchy as all hell.
Bright Eyes - Digital Ash in a Digital Urn - better than Postal Service
Why? - Elephant Eylash - pretty good indie rock from a rapper
Lou Barlow - EMOH - acoustic, folky pop stuff from the driving force of Sebadoh
Fiery Furnaces - EP - spastic pop
Spoon - Gimme Fiction - good pop/rock from the best rock band on the planet
Beck - Guero - it's Beck!
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake It's Morning - really great country/americana/whatever you wanna call it
Sufjan Stevens - Illinois - piano, horns, and a banjo
Architecture in Helsinki - In Case We Die - cutesy, spastic pop that's really good
LCD Soundsystem - self-titled - great dance music
Russian Futurists - Our Thickness - weird pop music
Decemberists - Picaresque - just plain weird. but catchy.
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm - catchy rock stuff. besides, the lead singer's black, expand your horizons.
Silverjews - Tanglewood Numbers - catchy southern rock stuff
The Boy Least Likely To - The Best Party Ever - quirky pop
The Evens - The Evens - a must if you have any idea who minor threat or fugazi is.
DangerDoom - The Mouse and the Mask - gotta have it if you watch adult swim
Sleater-Kinney - The Woods - Grrl Rock
New Pornographers - Twin Cinema - Great pop rock stuff from an indie supergroup
Ladytron - Witching Hour - electronic pop
Iron and Wine - Woman King - fleshed out folk stuff.

I agree with most of your choices, but I really don't like either of these (though I do enjoy the first track on The Best Party Ever). Art Brut's vocals just grate on my nerves, though I suppose a few more listens might help me get used to them.

What do you think of "Feels"?

I liked some of Feels ("Did you see the words," "grass"). "the bees" is the worst song ever.

Art Brut is effing horrible pretentious crap. wtf man.

Sleater-Kinney is pretty cool, although they could improve by changing up their tone a bit. It's like listening to Pennywise.
