Excuse my apparent ignorance. I've read and re-read your post and seem to be missing something.

Do the dealers not fan out and verify the cards before the deck is put in play? I long ago fell into the habit of checking them myself while it's being done. Don't really know why, just do.

yeah - but people will bring cards in and put them in their hand (i.e. aces which are worth a lot)
