Why do short stacks push and then rebuy.

I am sure anyone that has played live has seen this (happens online too, but much less often). Doesn't really matter if it is LHE, NL or PL. They buy-in for a normal amount say a rack of the color of the table, they play, get sucked out on, play badly, make questionable calls, etc.

Now they are down to just enough to play another hand and the next thing you know they are AI on the flop or turn with a very questionable hand, i.e. one that is very likely to not win. Lose and rebuy for another rack. They have enough in their poket to rebuy multiple times, but they only buy in for a minimum, bust and rebuy again and again.

So is the mental process here? What are these people thinking? What is their motivation?

It's called racking off. Take advantage of it, many people do it. It's easier to rack off with only a few chips in front of you, kind an oh-well I'll get lucky here followed by the auto-rebuy. Just anpther form of tilt.

It's a desperation move.
It almost as if they are conceeding the lose of this rack, and can now start fresh with a new rack.

Given the logic involved in this style of play there are three definite possible explanations:

1) Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Chances are high that their mother drank heavily during pregnancy, as much as a quart of bourbon daily, without missing a day. In grade school the syndrome would have manifested itself in aberrant behavior, such as painting a valentine card using his own blood or crapping himself without knowing it.

2) An epidemiologically-linked case of chemical poisoning. This could be easily verified by tracing the person's childhood geography. If he was front-and-center at Love Canal, chances are he thinks it's good poker to push that teensie pile into the middle when he finaly gets aces(without reloading first), but will flat call TPTK to the river to see your set and spill off 90% of a buy-in.

3) Then there is seizure aggravation in idiopathic generalized epilepsies, a condition brought on by prolonged sniffing of volatiles like gasoline or glue. If you see the habitual short stacker dashing off to the can every 20 minutes and returning with glazed eyes and giving off the scent of a powerful adhesive, ths could explain the strategy. He may also have a visible brain tumor, sometimes massive, that people could mistake for a cat napping on his head.

Any of these should help explain it.

Um, short stacking in NL keeps you from making the difficult post-flop decisions that make the game difficult. Weaker players generally do better with a short stack.

In limit, who knows. Maybe they set a limit for them to lose, lose it, and can't control themselves to quit playing. You also don't have a running total of losses sitting in front of you if you've been rebuying.
