Default Ugy arrested. For attempted murder?!

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...x.html?cnn=yes

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) -- Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Ugueth Urbina was arrested on a charge of attempted murder, police said on Tuesday.

Last month, Urbina and a group of men allegedly wielded machetes at several employees at his family's ranch, and poured gasoline on them in an attempt to set them on fire. Five workers were injured, and one of them suffered burns on the back and right arm, police said.

One victim, Argenis Farias, accused Urbina of being among the attackers.

Urbina, who was detained late Monday at another home on the outskirts of Caracas, has insisted he had nothing to do with the violence at the ranch.

Urbina's lawyer said the pitcher was sleeping at the time and was not involved. The authorities said Urbina would be formally charged once he appears before a judge.

Urbina became a free agent after playing the last season with the Phillies.

"This of course can in some way hurt his career as a professional ballplayer, and all will depend on the way in which he is brought before justice," said defense lawyer Jose Luis Tamayo.

Urbina was with his mother and other relatives when the police came with an arrest warrant, Tamayo said. He called the arrest "inexplicable."

"Aside from whether a person is guilty of a crime or not, if there is no danger of flight or obstruction of justice, that person has a right to be tried while free," Tamayo said.

The lawyer said Urbina has cooperated with the authorities all along, noting he has come to the police voluntarily to provide testimony.

It was the second violent incident in a year for the Urbina family. Urbina's mother was kidnapped by drug traffickers in September 2004 and held for $6 million. She was rescued five months later in a mountainous zone in southern Venezuela.

Urbina has a 44-49 record with 237 saves and a 3.45 ERA in 11 seasons.

I really don't understand it.

If I were from a country other than the US but made it here to play sports for millions of dollars, I'd do one of the following:

1) tell my family friends if they want to see me to come to the US

2) move my family and friends to the US.

This smells of a scam. Bet he can buy his way out of it though.

Reminds me of the baseball player whose mom was kidnpapped a while back.

Edit: I didn't read the whole thing cause I'd already heard it mentioned on 790teh Zoner the other day. That'll teach me.

I agree with what you said about moving to the US. People that dont move just want to feel superior to others by living in a poor country and being ultra rich.

Yes he will buy his way out of it.

I dont doubt he did it by the way. He just snapped. He came back home saw some of his employees swimming in his pool and lost his mind and wanted to kill them. He figured ill just kill them. I dont know if he was physically there, but its 50/50 he might have actually been sleeping, the only thing that is 100% is that he payed some guys to go and beat up his employees who where swimming in his pool.

He should go to Jail, but everyone knows the justice system in South America is a joke.

You would think so no? But ill add to it, what I meant to say is that they either want to feel superior by living in those countries even when they have millions of dollars or are just completely oblivious to everything that happens around them and the wallet inspector bit from the simpsons would probably work on them. Its just common sense that you would think of the consequences of having millions of dollars, while living in a place where most people are struggling to get by.

Players who live in poor countries cant go outside and walk around like normal people, they need to pay for bodyguards and cant really live normal lives because everyone else is struggling to get by and they are making millions.

Thats why I said they obviously want to feel superior or are just not using their brains.
