When I was in college, a music professor of mine who had studied at Princeton told us this story: his favorite professor lived up the street from Einstein. "Why isn't this obvious?" is along similar lines but with a bit more arrogance or condescension. It could also under certain circumstances be another remark from David, such as that which you are aping. It could also be added to your quote, thusly:

"No they haven't. Do you see why not? Why isn't this obvious?"
