What the [censored] is the matter with you people?!

THE POLL IS FOR BEST VIDEO GAME, not most innovative or groundbreaking or influential!

Yet each thread is filled with "Blah blah, such and such game didn't innovate as much as this other game." Doesn't MATTER.

The best video games will usually be very influential, groundbreaking ones -- that does not mean they're ALL influential, or the MOST influential/groundbreaking.

No offense Phoenix -- wasn't addressing just you, your quote just illustrated my point the best.

More importantly, this is an OPINION poll. Meaning, whatever people use to decide their opinion is fine.

Except when their opinion is wrong, like voting for anything other than Zelda 3.

Obviously it's an opinion poll. I'm just saying that when you get people openly saying that they voted for a game because it birthed a genre, even though another title was a better game... even they're admitting that they voted against the better game in the name of innovation/influence.

I realize that for some people, innovating and groundbreaking gameplay is a huge factor in how high they rank a game (I'd argue that it's influence on the gaming industry shouldn't be factored into it though). And that's fine. But I think it's important that people don't get totally caught up in acknoledging the most influential/innovative games simply because they were influential and innovative -- especially if you'd admit that the other game was a BETTER game.

Or maybe I'm just bitter that SFII vs. LttP is so close.

To me, what you are comparing is the EXPERIENCE of playing these games when they were released. If games was revolutionary in its genre, the experience was that much better because it was like nothing you had played before.

Right -- which is why I understand why some people would go on about something being groundbreaking and innovative. Obviously I don't think it's the be-all end-all judge of a game's worth, although I definitely love many games that were groundbreaking and innovative. But I understand it as a defensible position, saying, "This game was great to play because it was unlike anything else before it."

But "influential" keeps being tossed around too, which implies that a certain game is better simply because many of the games that came after followed its formula. Which is just downright silly. That's like saying "This game was great to play because it INFLUENCED GAMES I PLAYED LATER."

All of this is BS anyway because Dune 2 got crushed in two straight rounds, and it was extremely influential.

Just cause it sold the most doesn't mean it's the best

I didn't say that it did. It was a secondary point. That is what the word "also" is for that I included at the beginning of the sentence.

Please give me a break. I said it was hard to argue that SMB3 was the best video game ever. Then, I *also* pointed out some sales trivia. I was in no way implying that high sales = good.

I think your sales trivia was for console games. Or did you select only through that period?

The best selling game ever is The Sims, by far. Nothing is even close.
